Titusville Florida's Sesquicentennial

The City of Titusville, Florida
SESQUICENTENNIAL
150th Anniversary Celebration

ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATORY ACTIVITIES

* SESQUICENTENNIAL Celebration Program *

Titusville, March 19-26, 2017 - Titusville was founded in 1867 when Confederate Col. Henry Theodore Titus stepped ashore on the banks of the Indian River, of what was then known as Sand Point. Col. Titus came to Sand Point with the idea of building a town on land owned by his wife Mary, and overlooking the Indian River where they had first stepped ashore, they built the first hotel and named it "The Titus House". The Colonel and Mary donated land for the first courthouse, four churches, laid out many of the town's streets, and established a link to the outside world by connecting the St. Johns and Indian Rivers with mule-drawn wagons.

The City of Titusville, the Greater Titusville Renaissance, Parrish Healthcare and several community partners are hosting the city's sesquicentennial celebration during the week of March 19th through the 26th, 2017.

November 18, 2016

We will kick off the new year at the Downtown Titusville Friday Night Live event, January 13, 2017. Mayor Walt Johnson will give a proclamation announcing the sesquicentennial and will open the time capsule that was filled 50 years ago. Also in January, an Anniversary Tree will be planted at the Pritchard House.

A week long celebration will begin Sunday, March 19th with a VIP Party at the historic Pritchard House. During the week there will be historical lectures and presentations, downtown walking tours, plays, family fun run, bicycle events, a parade and will culminate on Sunday, March 26th with a good old fashion community picnic at Sand Point Park with food, fun, entertainment and games.

At the Christmas Tree Lighting, we will refill the time capsule with items recommended by the community and placed back on its shelf at City Hall.

We invite community organizations and businesses to do their own celebrations throughout the year. List your events with GTR and you can use the official anniversary logo and we will help promote your event.

City of Titusville: 150th Anniversary Announcement

The City of Titusville will hit a significant milestone in 2017: the 150th Anniversary of its founding!

The City, the Greater Titusville Renaissance and a group of community citizens are currently coordinating activities to celebrate this commemorative event. We will kick off the celebration on Friday, January 13, 2017 during the Downtown Friday night street party. The Mayor of the City of Titusville will give a proclamation and open the Time Capsule that was filled 50 years ago.

After the opening of the capsule in January, we plan to hold a contest for the community to make suggestions as to what should go back in the time capsule to be opened in another 50 years. At the July 4th Celebration, we plan to announce the winning items that will go into the time capsule, fill and close the capsule.

The main anniversary celebration will be March 19-26 featuring a week-long of historical events, parades, garden parties, lectures, theatrical shows, 5k run and end with an olde fashioned family picnic at Sandpoint Park.

During the year, we would like to invite organizations throughout the Titusville community to organize your own 150th Anniversary event. You will have the opportunity to use the official 150th Anniversary Logo. Your event may be promoted in area listings, and anniversary promotions and advertising throughout 2017.

Some suggestions are: Antique Car Show, Fashion Show Luncheon featuring styles of the times, Bicycle events, Strolls over the Bridge, Ice Cream Socials, Dog Show & Parade, Fishing Tournaments, Sailing events, Kayaking events and much more! For not-for-profits, what a great idea to use the anniversary theme for your fundraising events.

If you would like to participate or need more information, please contact Cathy Musselman at 321-607-6512 / cathy@greatertitusville.com.

We look forward to having you join us in the grand celebration of our beautiful City of Titusville!
