6th Annual Horseback Poker Ride and Camp-out
The Citizens for the St Sebastian Preserve will host the 6th Annual Horseback Poker Ride and Camp-out on Saturday, November 6th. This event is a fundraiser to help meet the recreational and conservation goals of the St Sebastian River Preserve State Park. Participants will ride a 10 mile trail, stopping to pick playing cards along the way. Prizes will be awarded for the best and worst Poker Hands as well as awards for oldest rider, youngest rider, oldest horse etc. There will be a photographer on the trail who will have photos for sale after the ride. All proceeds are donated to the Park. Riders pay $20 for their first hand and $5 for each additional hand. The $20 fee includes lunch, door prizes and other awards. Camping is also available Friday, November 5th through Sunday November 8th. Pre-registration is requested for Poker Ride participants, but campers must register by October 31st. The event is held on the northwest portion of the State Park, alongside the Visitor Center. It is accessed via County Road 507 in Fellsmere, on the north border of the C-54 canal. You must have your own horse to participate in the Poker Ride. Please note that is now Florida Law that all children under 16 riding in a State Park must wear a helmet, exceptions will not be made. Riders must also show proof of negative Coggins. The Citizens for the St. Sebastian Preserve, formerly the Coastal Preserves Alliance, is recognized by the Florida Park Service as the Citizen Support Organization for the St Sebastian River Preserve State Park. A CSO serves as a volunteer organization to help meet their Park's goals, both physical and financial. During this time of budget cuts, your State Park needs you more than ever. The Citizens for the St Sebastian Preserve, thanks to funds raised by the Horseback Poker Rides supplies the port-a-pottie appreciated by horseman and hikers alike on the south side Ranch Camp, has purchased monitoring and research equipment for Scrub Jay and Red Cockaded Woodpecker research, provided supplies and food to Park Service Fire Crews, replaced the roofs on the stalls at the Horsemen's Headquarters and more. By the time of the Poker Ride the CSSP will have purchased more picnic tables for both camps as well as built new stalls for day riders at the Horseman's Camp. Just as important is the CCSP's job in providing advice and guidance to the Park Staff on the needs and concerns of the general public in regards to Park issues. Besides the financial and volunteer support it provides the Park, the CSSP gives the public a direct line to the Park Staff. It is vitally important to those who use the Park and are interested in its' future, be they hikers, equestrians, kayakers, neighbors etc to be a part of the CSO.
We are inviting all members of the community; hikers, bikers, riders, kayakers, birders, neighbors and all lovers of nature to stop by the Visitor's Center on the day of the Poker Ride from 10:30 to 12:30. Rangers and CSO members will be hand on to answer questions and will provide free hay rides (11:00 and 12:00) to members of the public interested in learning more about becoming members of the Citizens for the St. Sebastian Preserve. Bring the family and find out more about your State Park, it's CSO and how you can help preserve this amazing resource for us all.

5th Annual Horseback Poker Ride a Success!
We had 120 paid riders this year and netted over $3,100 for the Park! That's $1,000 more than last year! Money raised is used to improve the Park as well as to fund research and preservation projects for the endangered species that call the Park home. With constant budget cuts, funds from events like the Poker Ride are needed more and more. Stop by the Visitor Center or attend a CSO Meeting to find out details on all the ways money from the fundraising events is spent. The CSO would like to thank all the riders who came out to support the event. These are tough times for many, and we really appreciate your support. We had riders from as far away as Miami, Okeechobee and Deland! The weather was perfect the entire weekend. The ride was longer this year and everyone enjoyed riding in the NW portion of the park. Everyone really enjoyed having a proper bathroom as we had total use of the Visitor Center as a base camp for the event. The Saturday night pig roast and pot luck was great fun with music and karaoke. Big thanks to Kim and Dan Gault for donating their hog and to Dan Gault and Dave Fuchs for all their hard work roasting the hog and doing all the million other things their wives made them do over the course of the weekend. A huge thanks is in order to all who came out to volunteer at the event including CPA members, the Treasure Coast Trail Riders and the Space Coast Riders Chapter of Women in the Wind (women's motorcycle riding club). We could not do this without you!
We would also like to thank our sponsors, particularly Fellsmere Feed for their wonderful donation of $230 to fund the Rider's Lunch as well as the supplies needed for the Camper's Pig Roast. Rhea Stover, of Rhea Stover Digital Photography, donated her time, skills, and equipment to take pictures of the riders on the trail. Riders were able to purchase the photos back at Camp, all proceeds were donated to the CSO. Door prizes were also generously donated by Malabar Feed & Farm in Malabar, The Feed Store of Melbourne, Marsh Landing Restaurant, Tractor Supply Company of Melbourne, Big Dave's Pizza of Palm Bay, The Sun Shack, Treasure Coast Trail Riders, 2 Jakes, and several other individuals.
