PRESCRIBED FIRE
Weather permitting, a prescribed fire will be conducted by Canaveral National Seashore in a 208 acre tract along the Playalinda Beach entrance road, just east of the fee booth, sometime between September 14 and September 30, 2011. The entrance road will be closed on the day of the operation to ensure public safety.This will be a joint operation with Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. The purpose is to reduce unnaturally high levels of fuel that could ignite from lightning strikes during the summer. The operation will also improve habitat for the federally-protected Florida Scrub Jay and Eastern Indigo Snake.
