ARCHAEOLOGICAL DIG AT PRITCHARD HOUSE
TITUSVILLE - The first phase of an archaeological survey of the historic Pritchard House in downtown Titusville will be held Saturday, March 25, 2006, in conjunction with Archaeological Month.
The event that is sponsored by the North Brevard Heritage Foundation, Inc., and the Indian River Anthropological Society, in cooperation with Brevard County Parks and Recreation, will be held from 10:00 a.m. until about 3:00 p.m.
The purpose of this survey, under the direction of Thomas E. Penders, a registered, professional archaeologist, is to ascertain the presence or absence of buried cultural deposits associated with the house or earlier components. It is hoped that the archaeological testing at the site will identify physical remains of the stable, windmill, above ground water tank, outhouse or privy pits, other unknown outbuildings, and/or other buried features not otherwise recorded.
Refreshments will be sold by The Questers Lovie Pritchard Chapter #561 as a fund raiser to purchase and restore furniture for the Pritchard House. The Questers is a national organization to further knowledge and education about antiques, and, to encourage the preservation, restoration and conservation of historic buildings, sites and antiquities.
The Pritchard House was constructed in 1891 at the corner of Washington Avenue and Pine Street in Titusville by Captain James Pritchard. Built in the "Queen Anne" style of architecture, the home has long been one of Titusville's most charming landmarks. It was acquired by Brevard County in 2005 from the family and plans call for it to be operated as a house museum featuring period furnishings and exhibits related to the Pritchard family and early Titusville.
The North Brevard Heritage Foundation, Inc., is not-for-profit support organization working in cooperation with Brevard County Parks and Recreation Department, North Area Parks Operations, to achieve the restoration, preservation, and operation of the Pritchard House museum. PRITCHARD HOUSE TO HOST CIVIL WAR LIVING HISTORY EVENT
TITUSVILLE - The first public event at the historic Pritchard House in downtown Titusville will be held Saturday, December 3, featuring a Civil War living history demonstration and a musical performance by Temple Baptist Church.
The event, to be held between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., is sponsored by the North Brevard Heritage Foundation, Inc., in cooperation with Brevard County Parks and Recreation.
Re-enactors in period military uniforms will portray both southern and union soldiers at a camp site set up on the Pritchard House grounds. The living history demonstration will include exhibits and drill demonstrations to show what the common soldier's life was like in both the Confederate and Federal armies.
A musical performance of historic and seasonal tunes will also be presented by the Temple Baptist Church from 1-2 p.m. In addition, members of the North Brevard Heritage Foundation, Inc., will offer short guided tours of the Pritchard House grounds to describe the home and the planned restoration project soon to begin.
"We're eager to have the public begin to enjoy this wonderful historic structure," said Foundation President Roz Foster. "Even though we won't be able to take tours inside at this time, there is much we can share about the Pritchard House and the family that called it home. We hope the community will get excited about this restoration project."

The North Brevard Heritage Foundation, Inc. is a newly formed nonprofit organization established to actively promote and facilitate the preservation of our area's historical structures and sites.
The organization's primary focus is to preserve historically significant properties that are threatened with loss, and to promote alternatives to structural demolition resulting from deterioration, disaster damage, or new site development. In addition, the Foundation seeks to promote increased public awareness and to actively participate with other public and private groups to save, restore, and preserve historically significant structures in North Brevard.
Current projects include:
Pritchard House Restoration and House Museum: the Foundation is assisting Brevard County in pursuing the restoration of the 1891 Pritchard House in Historic Downtown Titusville. The Foundation will actively participate in raising funds, planning and supporting the restoration, and operating the preserved home as a museum.
Oliver's Camp: This project is being pursued in cooperation with Brevard County and the Brevard Community College to relocate, restore, and use for public programs, several historic structures that have been donated and would have otherwise been demolished. Oliver's Camp will feature folk-life exhibits and events focusing on the area's citrus, agriculture and commercial fishing heritage.
The Foundation's first active project is "Pitch in for the Pritchard House." The Foundation welcomes volunteers with specialized skills in historic restoration and anyone who wants to help.
Interested members of the community are also invited to become a member of The North Brevard Heritage Foundation. Individual memberships start at $20.00, and other membership categories include Family, Student, Supporting Organization, Friend, Founding Member, Lifetime Member, Patron, and Benefactor.
