PHILOSOPHY

Hospice is a concept of care, not a place. Hospice provides support and care for persons in the last phases of incurable disease so that they may live as fully and as comfortably as possible. Hospice recognizes dying as part of the normal process of living and focuses on maintaining the quality of remaining life.

The Principles of Hospice Care are:

  • Palliative care (care which enhances comfort and improves quality of life) to all terminally ill persons with less than six months prognosis.
  • Concern for the patient and family as the unit of care.
  • Management of care by an experienced team of clinical professionals.
  • Full range of supportive care.
  • Bereavement follow-up.
  • A holistic approach that includes the physical, social, psychological, emotional and spiritual components of a human being.

Hospice of St. Francis, Inc.

In early 1977, Emilie Sasko, R.N. received a calling to develop a hospice in north Brevard. Due to her dedication, on November 28, 1977 Hospice of St. Francis, Inc. (HOSF) was incorporated as a not-for-profit, volunteer organization. HOSF was the second hospice offering these services in the state of Florida.

During 1990, HOSF transitioned from this all volunteer agency to an agency with a paid professional staff and strong auxiliary support from community volunteers. Professional staff consists of registered nurses, social workers, home health aides, spiritual and bereavement counselors and the services of physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology and dietary consultations.

HOSF serves all of Brevard county and is located at 1250-B Grumman Place, Titusville Florida 32780. We can be reached at: 321-269-4240; fax: 321-269-5428
