DEDICATION OF NEW CONTRUCTION AT MAX BREWER BRIDGE TO BE HELD THURSDAY

TITUSVILLE, Fla. - A dedication ceremony for new construction at the A. Max Brewer Bridge will be held on Thursday, October 2 at 2 p.m. with Congressman Tom Feeney and State Representative Ralph Poppell in attendance.

The A. Max Brewer Bridge will be replaced to the south of its current location with a new high-level fixed-span bridge approximately 2,700 feet long. The South Relief Bridge will be replaced in its current location with a new low-level bridge. Both bridges will have two 12-foot travel lanes, plus eight-foot outside shoulders and sidewalks on each side.

Bridge inspections have indicated that both the South Relief Bridge and A. Max Brewer Bridge are in poor condition and are considered functionally obsolete by today's bridge and roadway design standards. Due to its age and the salt-water environment, the swing-span portion of the main bridge has sustained severe corrosion, and its mechanical and electrical components are in very poor condition. The bridge is currently closed for repair.

The new bridge will be designed and built as a high-level, fixed-span bridge that can accommodate marine vessels up to 65 feet above sea level without disrupting traffic on the roadway. This will provide a benefit to the community by eliminating the travel delays associated with the numerous daily bridge openings.

County, state and federal funds will be used for the project.

The A. Max Brewer Bridge, which spans the Indian River in Titusville, connects the City of Titusville to the barrier island. It provides access to the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, the beaches, and the Kennedy Space Center.

Representatives from the Titusville City Council, Brevard County Board of County Commissioners, the North Brevard Commission on Parks and Recreation, the Pier Committee, Titusville Area Chamber of Commerce, Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge, NASA, Canaveral National Seashore and the Florida Department of Transportation have been invited to attend. The dedication is open to the public.
