BREVARD COMMUNITY COLLEGE, (COCOA), FLA. - Dr. Phil Simpson, Vice Provost for the Brevard Community College Cocoa and Titusville campuses, was recently named the 2008 Outstanding Graduate Alumnus Award from the Eastern Illinois University English Graduate Program.

Simpson has been officially inducted into the 2008 Class of Outstanding Graduate Alumni, representing graduate programs from across the university. His nomination was reviewed by an awards committee and the process was very competitive. Simpson traveled to Charleston, Illinois to receive the award during a formal ceremony.

"This was a wonderful opportunity to return to my alma mater, re-acquaint myself with my former professors and some old friends, and meet new people from all kinds of academic disciplines," Simpson said.  "In particular, I was delighted to be able to thank in person one of my professors, Dr. Timothy Shonk from the English department, for convincing me to become an English major as an undergraduate.

"This decision changed my life for the better, and 25 years later, I wanted to let Dr. Shonk know the positive impact he had as an educator.  It's a reminder to us all as teachers of the enormous long-term influence we can have on our students."

Simpson also was officially inducted into the 2008 Class of Outstanding Graduate Alumni, representing graduate programs from across the university. Simpson received the award during a formal ceremony in the grand ballroom of the university's student union before faculty, staff, administrators and award winners.

Earlier that day, Simpson presented an informal talk, "Yes, There Is Life After the English Degree,'' to about 20 graduate students at the invitation of English Graduate Program Director Chris Hanlon. Simpson earned a bachelor of arts degree and a master of arts in English from Eastern Illinois University.

During his tenure at BCC Simpson also has served as the Dean of Humanities, Fine Arts, and Social/Behavioral Sciences.  He leads an interdisciplinary core of faculty in offering a wide variety of classes and study opportunities at the college. He also has served as national president of the Popular Culture Association.

BREVARD COMMUNITY COLLEGE, (COCOA), FLA. The Brevard Community College Men's Basketball team is touring area churches and organizations in a community outreach campaign that honors area leaders and highlights the players as role models in academics and sports.

Coach Terry Parks and team members recently honored Dr. W.O. Wells Sr., pastor of the Greater St. Paul Baptist Church, as a civil rights activist and leader, who in the 1960s spearheaded a movement that desegregated the county's schools, restaurants, hotels, beaches and places of employment.

Parks, surrounded by players, presented Wells with a framed photograph of the team and two game T-shirts, one for Wells and his wife, Dr. Ann Wells, former BCC associate vice president for library sciences.

"Dr. Wells, thank you for your contributions to the Civil Rights Movement,'' said Parks, who is a nephew of Rosa Parks, a civil rights activist who kicked off the Montgomery Bus Boycott, when she refused to give up her seat and move to the back of a city bus.

Players Tuboris Larkins, of Palm Beach Gardens, Virgil Marshall, of Cocoa, and Babs Somoye, of London, England, shared their career goals with the audience and their strong interest in education. Parks invited the congregation to attend their home games, which are held at the BCC Melbourne campus gym.

Wells praised the young men for their focus on education and their determination to succeed at their goals in life.

"We are proud to have such fine young people, represented in our community,'' Wells said. "We look forward to hearing great things about each one of you as you pursue their dreams.''

The men's basketball team has improved from last year's game record to a current record of 7 and 6. There are 13 members on the team. Parks attributes the winning momentum to a great team who works well together and is focused on athletics and academic excellence.

Jim Ross, BCC Vice President for Advancement and Public Affairs, lauds the promotional campaign that not only showcases the players' athletic abilities, but their academic excellence, character and examples as positive role models.

"We are proud to have these athletes not only winning games, but displaying a winning attitude toward academic excellence and successful career paths,'' Ross said.

Community leaders throughout the county are supportive of the basketball team.

Richard "Dick'' Blake, a popular basketball coach for the Monroe High School Wildcats, who lead his team to state championships and a national championship in the 1960s, said the Titan team is on an upward swing.

"Coach Parks is doing a great job, and we've got to have support coming from the county,'' said Dick Blake, a Rockledge City Councilman. "What feels good is when a basketball team is playing, and they have a full packed house.

"That within itself will motivate players when they see the attendance. We've got to really get on the band wagon. This is our team! This is our county! Brevard Community College is ours! Let's embrace them. Let's support them. Let's go to their games and let the coach know that we're there.''

For more information about the team and the team's game schedule call the BCC at (321) 632-1111.
